Rob Ball Funland
Funland is a new release from Rob Ball, a brilliant Whitstable-based photographer featured in our current exhibition Seaside: Photographed.
From Blackpool to Brighton, and Barry Island to Brightlingsea, these richly-detailed photographs capture the candyfloss colours and faded nostalgia of a seaside culture that is peculiarly (yet wonderfully) British.
“My latest book - Funland - was released last month. The book features over 80 images of British seaside resorts made over the past 10 years. It includes an introduction by Lucy Davies and an afterword by me. It focusses on our British seaside entertainment culture and most of the images are taken looking inwards, rather than out to sea. There’s a Dreamland (Margate), Pleasureland (Abroath), Leisureland (Great Yarmouth) and a Funland (Weston-super-mare). I visited around 30 locations in total all over the UK. I am interested in our coastal culture and wanted to make a contemporary record of it.” - Rob Ball
Rob Ball has been a photographer for over 20 years. He spent time working as a news, sport and crime scene photographer before shifting to long-form personal projects while lecturing at Canterbury Christ Church University. Rob has exhibited his work internationally and continues to work on projects and commissions while lecturing.
