The painting is a response to the artists daily ritual of bathing in the Sea at the Walpole Bay Tidal Pool in Margate Uk. Catherine has been observing the behaviour of other swimmers, the ecstatic response of submerging in the waters. The ecstasy vs fear of taking yourself out of a comfort zone, to expose the body to the natural element of very cold water, can be emotional, spiritual and physical.
“Resolutions” was designed for the window installation at UAL Holborn London, commissioned by Artquest for their 20th anniversary.
Catherine Chinatree is Margate Based multidisciplinary visual artist, who is interested in the representational idea of shared “reality” with a focus on identity, dualism, and cultural fluidity. The work is supported with research in Anthropology, Social surrealism and human behaviour. The work can be described as both figurative and socially surreal, and she is fascinated by the dual natural of many things. Most of her inspiration comes from the outside world of everyday life, the daily activities, symbolism/ Rituals, and the people she meets. Being of Welsh, Caribbean and Irish descent, Catherine is deeply rooted in hybrid culture, and the this idea of a shared reality, not only between us humans, but everything that makes up our natural/supernatural world, and how we balance between the two. Her practice is both studio and outdoor based.
