Examining the artistic tropes of flowers and floral still life imagery, the artist explores ideas of remembrance, censorship and queerness through methodologies of simultaneous redaction and reconstruction through bold brush work. Exploring queerness both in its modern sense as culture, politics and identity within the LGBTQ+ community, as well as its original meaning of something strange or peculiar. Rafferty seeks to recontextualise and reclaim flowers from the domestic doldrums, recognising how historically, female artists were permitted to paint flowers and very little else.
